What is the MEP/AEC industry, and what does HEAPY do?

The AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry focuses on designing and building the spaces where we live, work, and learn. Within that, MEP engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) brings buildings to life powering systems like heating and cooling, lighting, water, and technology infrastructure.

At HEAPY, we design high-performance, sustainable buildings that support occupant wellness, reduce environmental impact, and help clients achieve their long-term goals. We partner with clients throughout a building’s lifecycle, combining engineering expertise with a Colleague First, collaborative approach to deliver thoughtful, innovative solutions.

How many interviews will there be?

We aim to keep our process thoughtful and efficient. Most candidates can expect two to three interview stages, depending on the position. We’ll always communicate what to expect upfront, including timelines and next steps, so
you’re never left guessing.

What type of interviews do you conduct?

Our interviews are designed to get to know both your technical abilities and how you collaborate.

You can expect a mix of:
  • Behavioral questions (how you’ve worked with others, solved problems, and grown)
  • Situational discussions (how you approach real-world challenges)
  • Position-specific conversations with technical team members
For some positions, we may include a practical exercise or discussion of past work, not as a test, but as a way to understand how you think and approach engineering challenges.

Will there be an assignment?

For most positions, there is no formal assignment.

For positions that involve client interaction, leadership, or business development, candidates may be asked to prepare a presentation during a later stage of the interview process. This is designed to reflect real aspects of the position such as communicating ideas, presenting to clients, or leading discussions.

We keep this process focused and relevant, giving you the opportunity to showcase your thinking, communication style and approach, rather than testing for the sake of it.

We have offices in Dayton, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Cleveland, OH; Indianapolis, IN; Raleigh, NC; Tampa, FL; and Pittsburgh, PA, with in-office, hybrid, and some remote opportunities depending on the position. We work as one connected team, collaborating across offices to serve clients and communities nationwide.
